Come\, meet some new people\, and learn about wines at the Social Club’s Wine Connoisseurs. \n~ Christy Fleurat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP to Bonnie Lichten at bonnie.wineclub@outlook.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou are Invited to the AUGUSTWine ConnoisseursEvent!  \n\n\n\nIn AUGUST\, the Wine Connoisseurs event is going to celebrate MERLOT Wines! \n\n\n\nPick your favorite MERLOT and bring along your favorite appetizers to celebrate a night of wonderous\, fine wine and food! \n\n\n\nMerlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape used as both a blending grape and as a single varietal. The name Merlot is thought to be a version of “merle”\, the French word for blackbird\, and it refers to the grape’s deep color. Merlot is estimated to be the third most grown variety with over 660\,000 acres globally. France is home to nearly two thirds of the world’s total plantings of Merlot. Beyond France it is also grown in Italy (where it is the country’s 5th most planted grape)\, California\, Algeria\, Romania\, Australia\, Argentina\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, Chile\, Greece\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, Switzerland\, Croatia\, Hungary\, Slovenia\, Mexico and even Long Island\, NY. It grows in many regions that also grow Cabernet Sauvignon but tends to be cultivated in the cooler parts of those areas.  \n\n\n\nWhile Merlot is grown across the globe\, there tend to be two main styles. The “International style”\, favored by many New World Wine regions\, tends to emphasize late harvesting to be able to produce inky\, purple colored wines that are full in body with high alcohol and lush\, velvety tannins with intense\, plum and blackberry fruit. While this international style is practiced by many Bordeaux wine producers\, the traditional “Bordeaux style” of Merlot involves harvesting Merlot earlier. We get together every Monday and settle in for a good game of Rummikub!  If you don’t know how to play we’ll provide a quick lesson or two. \n\n\n\nRummikub is easy to learn; the object is to be the first to play every tile on your rack.  The “board” changes all the time as players adjust the tiles on the table. It combines luck and strategy and it changes quickly so every player has a chance to win until the very end.

The history of Pinot can be traced back for the better part of a millennium in France (Burgundy) where even today the great Grand Cru’s of the region command some of the highest prices in the entire world of wine. In the United States\, Pinot Noir thrives in California\, particularly Sonoma County\, where the Russian River Valley\, Sonoma Coast\, and Alexander Valley nurture excellent ones. Santa Barbara County is also the source of top Pinot Noir. When it comes to Pinot Noir\, for all the challenges it presents in the vineyard and winery\, the rewards are well worth it – especially in California! \n\n\n\nDepending on where it’s grown and how it’s produced\, Pinot Noir can either be bright\, fruit-forward\, and perfect for everyday sipping\, or capable of aging for decades. In addition to its use in Rosé and Champagne (and Rosé Champagne!)\, red Pinot Noir can be found in a wide range of styles and at price points across the spectrum. Pinot Noir’s higher acidity and more moderate tannins is a cooler-climate grape variety that make it both well-suited to drinking on its own and pairing with a range of foods. \n\n\n\nPinot Blanc offers fruity aromas\, often of apple\, citrus fruit\, and floral characteristics. Bottles that are varietally pure\, although more difficult to find\, provide stronger floral characteristics\, stone fruits and a headier minerality. Regardless of their exact composition\, most wines under the label ‘Pinot Blanc’ are rather high in acidity. Pinot blanc wines are usually madefor immediate consumption. \n\n\n\nPinot Noir Rose is a delicate\, crisp pink wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes.
