The name Merlot is thought to be a version of “merle”\, the French word for blackbird\, and it refers to the grape’s deep color. Merlot is estimated to be the third most grown variety with over 660\,000 acres globally. France is home to nearly two thirds of the world’s total plantings of Merlot. Beyond France it is also grown in Italy (where it is the country’s 5th most planted grape)\, California\, Algeria\, Romania\, Australia\, Argentina\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, Chile\, Greece\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, Switzerland\, Croatia\, Hungary\, Slovenia\, Mexico and even Long Island\, NY. It grows in many regions that also grow Cabernet Sauvignon but tends to be cultivated in the cooler parts of those areas.  \n\n\n\nWhile Merlot is grown across the globe\, there tend to be two main styles. The “International style”\, favored by many New World Wine regions\, tends to emphasize late harvesting to be able to produce inky\, purple colored wines that are full in body with high alcohol and lush\, velvety tannins with intense\, plum and blackberry fruit. While this international style is practiced by many Bordeaux wine producers\, the traditional “Bordeaux style” of Merlot involves harvesting Merlot earlier. Come\, meet some new people\, and learn about wines at the Social Club’s Wine Connoisseurs.   \n~ Christy Fleurat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHIS EVENT IS AT MAX CAPACITY\n\n\n\nChristy Fleurat Invites YOU to the July Wine Connoisseurs Event! \n\n\n\nIn July\, the Wine Connoisseurs event is going to celebrate BIG\, BOLD Wines and a BBQ! \n\n\n\nWhat are BIG\, BOLD Wines?  One definition is: “Bold wines are forceful and fill your mouth with their taste; they are richer\, rounder and creamier than a lighter wine”.  So you can bring a red or white wine that fits YOUR description of BIG and BOLD!  It should be a wine that will hold up to a BBQ main course! \n\n\n\nThe date is a little different this month so please be aware when you RSVP – it’s being held on MONDAY night\, July 3rd. \n\n\n\nThe details are:Date: Monday\, July 3\,2023Time: 5:00 – 8:00Maximum number of attendees: 35Venue: to be announced after sign-up closes \n\n\n\nOur hosts will be preparing the main course which will be a BBQ dinner. Thank YOU!  \n\n\n\nWe ask couples to please bring a home-made\, home-assembled BBQ side dish (potato salad\, coleslaw\, Mac n’ Cheese\, etc.) or a dessert (cookies\, brownies\, etc.) and a bottle of your favorite BIG\, BOLD wine from around the globe.  \n\n\n\nSingles\, please bring a bottle of your favorite BIG BOLD wine and a box of candy.  \n\n\n\nA reminder for all\, please note for all of the Wine Connoisseur’s events\, the minimum price of your contributory wine is $20.00 or higher.   \n\n\n\nThe first 35 respondents will be placed on the attending list and others will be placed on a wait list.  If there are cancellations\, names will be pulled from the wait list in the order that they are received. \n\n\n\nThe word “connoisseurs” means becoming a knowledgeable wine expert. Join us at tables in front of Capriotti’s; you’ll have  plenty of lunch choices!   \n\n\n\nIf you just want to play and not have lunch\, then join us at Mountain Shadows Open Cards room. \n\n\n\nBoth locations meet every Monday at 12pm \n\n\n\nPlease bring your Rummikub game if you have one \n\n\n\nThis is a FUN\, SOCIAL group open to all Social Club members. We get together every Monday and settle in for a good game of Rummikub!  If you don’t know how to play we’ll provide a quick lesson or two. \n\n\n\nRummikub is easy to learn; the object is to be the first to play every tile on your rack.  The “board” changes all the time as players adjust the tiles on the table. It combines luck and strategy and it changes quickly so every player has a chance to win until the very end.
