In March 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the nation, as well as our Sun City group activities. We were all mandated to stay home; maintain a social distance, and wear personal protective equipment when around others. Social Rocks! began with the sole purpose of staying connected with our members, friends and neighbors. Our challenge was to develop an activity in which connection was the primary goal. We wanted to spread joy, kindness, and a sense of community through creativity while still complying with the Nevada Governor’s mandate. In order to accomplish this, we identified 4 objectives:
- Create positive messages in the safety of our homes (rock painting)
- Facilitate social connection (SCS Social Club Facebook page)
- Incorporate new skills (phone camera and/or computer)
- Motivate physical fitness (gets you outside and moving)
The goal is to paint a rock, hide a rock and someone will unexpectedly find your rock! Have fun and be creative — painting rocks is a great way to express yourself and relax at the same time. No matter the artistry level, no found rock goes unappreciated. A simple act of kindness can make a powerful impact by brightening the days of strangers — one colorful rock at a time. Maybe it changes their day — they’re not in a great mood and they find a rock that says ‘smile’ or ‘be happy’ and it totally changes their outlook.
The rules are simple: When you find a rock take a picture and, post it to the Facebook group for all to see. Keep the rock for yourself, or hide it in a different place.
Eventually, Social Rocks! will organize rock painting parties, painted rock gardens, and other community activities. This group has become a HUGE success thanks to everyone involved. We welcome all interested club members, from painters to hiders to finders!
Join the Social Club Facebook group to post your finds and see what others are finding today!
